Chair’s Message

Welcome to the Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering at the University of Hawaii. Our graduate program was established by Dr. Charles Bretschneider in 1966, one of the first of its kind in the United States. The Department offers an academic program leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in three disciplines: coastal engineering, offshore engineering, and ocean resources engineering. The faculty members are known nationally and internationally for their research and educational work. Our students come from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds with the common objective to apply their prior education and work experience to ocean-related engineering careers. On this website, you will find useful information related to our academic and research programs.

ORE is 50 years old this academic year! On 12 Nov 2016, over 175 alumni, faculty, staff, students, industry sponsors, friends and family joined for an evening of food, stories, music, engineering displays, aquarium exhibits and overall camaraderie. Mahalos to ORE50 industry sponsors ― EKNA Services, Navatek, and Sea Engineering ― for gifts that made the evening possible. We also appreciate Makai Ocean Engineering's gift to support our graduate students in recognition of ORE's 50th anniversary. Thanks also to SOEST and JIMAR for their support of ORE50, to Jana Light of the UH Foundation who played a big role in the success of the event, and to our many volunteers who brought everything together. Check out photos from the event on the ORE Facebook page here.
